Sleeping Habits That Are Really Bad For Entrepreneurs

The successful entrepreneur has to be focused on growing the business and believe it or not, this also includes developing a proper sleeping routine. It is obvious that sleep is most likely the last thing that you think about at the moment but when you deprive yourself from sleep for a long period of time, it is a guarantee that your health and your business will suffer.

We will talk about some sleeping habits that are really bad for you and that you need to change as soon as possible. All of them are common among entrepreneurs from all around the world. Remember that you cannot become a millionaire if you do not rest enough at night.

All-Nighters And Oversleeping On Weekends

You surely already heard about the fact that you have to go bed at the same hour and do the same when you wake up in order to optimize sleep. It is common sense but the entrepreneur will often ignore this because there is this belief that all-nighters can easily be fixed by oversleeping on the weekends. This is something that you should never do or at least, this is something that you have to avoid as much as possible. Why is that?

The human body is sensitive to conditioning. In the event that you wake up and go to bed at hours that are drastically different, your circadian rhythm is disturbed. This is basically the 24 hours cycle that is linked to hormone production, cell regeneration and brain activity.

We can compare this with basically living in the east cost of USA for one week, then flying to Spain for the weekend and then getting back for the following week. Such a pattern is incredibly disturbing. Too many people end up exhausted and this will have a negative effect on business.

Keep in mind that even a couple of hours of difference between day-to-day sleep can have a negative impact on your work results. Try to always go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same hour every day. Do not oversleep during the weekends and respect the routine only during the days. While you can use weekends to recharge your batteries, those batteries do not recharge faster if you sleep more.

As an entrepreneur you need to be sharp. Believe it or not, it is better to leave something for the following day than doing everything during your regular sleeping time. Your effectiveness will be higher and there is a pretty good chance that you will actually end up doing more work if your body is properly rested.

Checking Emails While In Bed

Believe it or not, your bed is for pleasurable activities like sleeping and sex. Your brain actually loves such a routine. As you get older, the eyes will instantly associate the bed with sleeping. If you keep checking your work email in bed or you take your laptop and start working, the brain will eventually make the connection between the bed and work. You never want this to happen. Many will tell you that you have to work at a desk. This is all so true.

In the event that you find yourself not being able to sleep because of the fact that you think about your business, the best thing that you can do is get up. When you think about work while in bed or when you actually work there, the brain gets use do being awake while you are in your bed. Simply get out of bed, write the ideas that you have, read a book, play a game or do anything else that gets you even more tired. Only lie in your bed when you are actually prepared to sleep.

Keep in mind that this also includes business phone calls. If someone calls you right before you go to bed and talks about business, there is a pretty good possibility that you will end up in work mode again. Tell all your partners and people that may call you to only contact you during the night when a real emergency appears.

Lack Of Unwinding Before Going To Bed

You cannot simply expect to get into your bed and instantly fall asleep. It is literally impossible to make the shift between work mode and bed time in a few seconds. Specialists recommend that you take around one hour to basically unplug before you go to bed. That will help you to sleep soundly. That time can be used to take a bath or a hot shower so that you can actually relax even more.

One thing that you might not be aware of is that you can have a much deeper sleep every single night if the temperature of your body is slightly increased before you jump in your bed. This was highlighted through a 2008 study that was conducted by the Netherlands Institute of Neuroscience.

If you do not like to take a shower before you go to bed, you can do other things too. Simply watch a movie or play a game. Read a book and turn up the temperature in your room. This has the same effect as the bath.

Conclusions

It is a shame that most entrepreneurs do not understand the importance of sleep and proper sleeping cycles. You should not do the same mistake. Do all that you can in order to improve the sleeping pattern that you have at the moment, especially if you have one that is quite hectic.
